Some Inforamtion on Badulla
BADULLA, the capital of the UVA Province is located 50 kms east from Nuwara Eliya, on
the eastern side of the Central Hill Range. Besides of 'beeing on the
way' to the East- and Southeast coast, Badulla lies outside the common tourist
routes, is unspoilt and interesting.
Badulla can be reached by road or by train. It is the last station of the old English Railway
Track which takes you from Colombo over the lowlands across the highest hills descending again
to the altitude of 2200 feet, to Badulla town. It is an exciting, beautiful but long
journey of ten to twelve hours.
Half faster -and not less interesting- is to travel by car: either over Kandy and the
magnificent Mahaveli Sanctuary, or over Ratnapura and the high hills thriugh the Haputale Pass
and Bandarawela. The distance from Colombo is similar both ways -a little over 200kms.
A third route over Hatton and Nur'Eliya is slightly longer though not less beautiful.
